I greeted everyone that walked by, nearly everyone of the people that I said good morning to took a brochure from me.
Then around 8:20AM the police showed up, not just one, not two but three. Am I that big of threat that three police officers need to show up to a guy that is just handing out educational information on the sidewalk?
Officer Hospodavis #1200 from the Fort Lauderdale police department asked me what I was doing. I told him that I was handing out educational information to the public. He asked me if he could see and I handed him a couple of brochures.
The officer said that someone by the name of George had called and said that I was harassing people. I explained that I am just handing out information and if people don’t want it that is fine, there is no confrontation here. I say good morning, good afternoon, I hand out the information and if the person does not take I tell them to have a good day.
The officer then proceeded to then give me a course on how to hand out information and telling me that standing directly in front of someone could be construed as harassment. He explained that I must stand to the side and offer the information, and that I must not push this on people. I truly thought at this point that Ashton Kutcher form the TV show Punked was going to step out of nowhere.
Not long after the police had left, an elderly gentleman wearing grey pants and a white shirt came out of the building behind me. I greeted him and offered him a brochure. He asked me what is was that I was offering him and I told him that it is educational information on jury duty and your rights as a juror. The gentleman then implied that I was trying to tamper with the jury and that he was going to call the police. I explained to him that the police had just been, three of them, but if he wants to waste tax payers money and the polices time, when they could be catching real criminals, go right ahead call them.
What is so wrong in handing information out to people?
What are these people so afraid of?
What is really going on in The Federal Court House in Fort Lauderdale?
Why are they doing their utmost to intimidate me?
Gandhi said “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
I handed out 187 brochures to people passing by; I do not know their business, I do not want to know their business and I am certainly NOT trying to interfere or tamper with any members of a jury. The materials that I hand out are to educate people on their rights, the people have a right if they are willing to accept the information to know this. Yet the people in the court house and the police are trying to stop me from educating people and exercising my first amendment right.
